Alim-Louis (Ben) Benabid

Professor Alim-Louis Benabid is a neurosurgeon and researcher who has spent his career working at the forefront of medical technology innovation. He is best known for pioneering the surgical technique of deep brain stimulation (DBS) for reducing tremor and restoring motor function in patients with advanced Parkinson’s disease. This revolutionary discovery has spawned a range of additional therapeutic applications for DBS, and its significance was recognised by the prestigious 2014 Lasker-DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award and the 2015 Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences.

In 2006, Professor Benabid founded Clinatec (Grenoble, France), a unique transdisciplinary institute that brings together researchers with diverse expertise to work towards the breakthroughs of the future. In his role as Chairman of the Board at Clinatec, Professor Benabid is driving major projects including the development of a brain-computer interface to allow quadriplegics to walk again, improved cancer diagnosis and anticancer drug delivery, and a neuroprotective treatment for Parkinson’s disease.
